Coming Through the Rye
by Robert Burns
(1759-1796)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coming thro the rye, poor body,
Coming thro the rye,
She draiglet a her petticoatie
Coming thro the rye.

O, Jennys a wat, poor body;
Jennys seldom dry;
She draiglet a her petticoatie
Coming thro the rye.

Gin a body meet a body
Coming thro the rye,
Gin a body kiss a body -
Need a body cry?

Gin a body meet a body
Coming thro the glen,
Gin a body kiss a body -
Need the warld ken?

My Hearts In The Highlands
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My hearts in the Highlands, my heart is not here,
My hearts in the Highlands a-chasing the deer -
A-chasing the wild deer, and following the roe;
My hearts in the Highlands, wherever I go.
Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North
The birth place of Valour, the country of Worth;
Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,
The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.

Farewell to the mountains high coverd with snow;
Farewell to the straths and green valleys below;
Farewell to the forrests and wild-hanging woods;
Farwell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods.

My hearts in the Highlands, my heart is not here,
My hearts in the Highlands a-chasing the deer
Chasing the wild deer, and following the roe;
My hearts in the Highlands, whereever I go.

• "You know that song If a body catch a body comin through the rye? Id like -"
"If If a body meet a body coming through the rye! old Phoebe said. Its a poem by Robert Burns."
"I know its a poem by Robert Burns."
"She was right, though. It is If a body meet a body coming through the rye. I didnt know it then, though."
"Anyway, I keep picturing all these kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobodys around - nobody big, I mean - except me. And Im standing at the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff
- I mean if theyre running and they dont look where theyre going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. Thats all Id do all day. Id just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know its crazy, but thats the only thing Id really like to be. I know its crazy."
